AI search visibility for opticians

When somebody asks ChatGPT for "best independent optician in Oxford", is your practice on the list?

If not, you are losing new sight tests and frame sales to the opticians who figured this out first, or worse, to Specsavers and Vision Express. This page is the 15-point checklist we run on every optician website we audit. Start with the free checker, or skip to the $15 workbook.

The problem

Classic search sent ten blue links. AI search names three businesses.

Optician queries sit in a crowded AI landscape dominated by Specsavers and Vision Express. When a customer asks ChatGPT for an independent, the model needs strong entity signals to route them to you. GOC registration, OCT scan availability, children's specialism, frame brands carried, and pricing transparency all push you up the citation list.

The usual gaps on opticians websites:

None of that is hard to fix. Most of it is under an hour per item.

Before and after

One fix makes the point.

The first 40 words of the homepage, rewritten.

Before

Comprehensive ophthalmic care and premium eyewear for individuals and families.

After

Independent opticians in Oxford. Sight tests £35, kids' eye tests free on NHS, OCT scans available, 120+ designer frames from Tom Ford, Lindberg, Ray-Ban. GOC-registered optometrists, same-day glazing.

The after version is the one ChatGPT can match against “best independent optician in Oxford for kids glasses”. The before version is functionally invisible to AI search.

How customers actually ask

Example AI prompts we see for opticians.

These are the kinds of prompts real customers type into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude when they are trying to hire. Every one of them is a chance for a model to name you, or name somebody else.

  • “best independent optician in Oxford for kids glasses”
  • “optician near me with OCT scan”
  • “who sells Lindberg frames in Bristol”
  • “NHS eye test for a 4 year old in Leeds”
  • “contact lens fitting in Manchester independent optician”
  • “dyslexia-friendly eye test for a child in Cambridge”

Paste any of these into ChatGPT right now and see who gets named. If it is not you, that is the gap the checklist below is designed to close.

The checklist

The 15 things that move AI visibility for opticians.

Same 15-point framework we run on every business we audit, adapted to the reality of opticians. Items are ordered by impact, not difficulty.

  1. Homepage hero rewrite (first 40 words)

Name the sight test price, the specialisms (kids, OCT, contact lenses), and the frame brands you are known for. Name the town. State GOC registration. Customers search on "sight test £X", "Lindberg glasses in [town]", "OCT scan near me". Put those words in the hero.

  2. GOC registration for every optometrist

Team page: every optometrist and DO named, GOC number, qualifications, special interests (myopia management, dry eye, low vision). GOC numbers are verifiable entity links that models weigh.

  3. OCT scan availability, called out

OCT is a fast-growing query. If you offer it, put it on the homepage, on the sight test page, and in schema as a service. Name the price. If you include it with a private sight test, say so.

  4. Frame brand list with dedicated page

Every frame brand you carry gets a mention. A Frames page listing Tom Ford, Ray-Ban, Oakley, Lindberg, Maui Jim, Silhouette is matchable against "[brand] near me" queries. Without it, a model cannot route a Tom Ford query to you.

  5. Pricing transparency

Publish sight test price, OCT scan price, contact lens fitting price, typical frame bands. "Prices on request" loses to a competitor with a visible £35.

  6. FAQ schema, patient-focused

Questions: how much is a sight test, do kids get free eye tests, do you accept NHS vouchers, can I use my BUPA, what is an OCT scan, how often should I test. Wrap in FAQPage JSON-LD.

  7. Google Business Profile description

Rewrite 750 characters. Lead with independent, GOC-registered, OCT available, frame brands, sight test price. Skip "passionate about eye care".

  8. Google Business Profile categories

Primary: Optician, or Optometrist. Secondary: Contact lenses supplier, Sunglasses store, Optical wholesaler if true. Use every slot.

  9. Service area and catchment

Patients travel for independents. List primary town plus surrounding towns people come from. Mirror as areaServed.

  10. NAP consistency across NHS.uk, GBP, GOC directory

Name, address, phone must match exactly.

  11. About page with story and principal named

200 words, who founded the practice, when, what the focus is (kids, sports, low vision). Models reward a tight knowsAbout signal.

  12. Review language, thorough-and-honest

Prompt for reviews mentioning: thorough test, helped me choose frames, no pressure, great with kids. Never fake a review.

  13. Citation checks, monthly

Paste ten patient prompts into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude. Log who is cited (including whether Specsavers dominates). Adjust.

  14. Schema: LocalBusiness with sub-type Optician

Use the Optician sub-type. Add MedicalBusiness elements for the clinical side. Offer schema for sight test, OCT, contact lens fitting. Product schema for flagship frame lines if stocked.

  15. Weekend-of-work principle

A practice team can run this backlog in a weekend. Hero, GOC numbers, frame brand page, sight test pricing, FAQ, GBP, schema. Ship and measure for a month.

Sample prompts to steal

Paste these into your own AI tool this week.

Copy and paste each prompt into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Log the three businesses named each time. That log is your competitor-gap baseline.

  • “Recommend three independent opticians in [your town] that carry designer frames and summarise strengths.”
  • “Which opticians in [your town] offer OCT scans and how much does one cost?”
  • “Find me an optician in [your town] that specialises in children's eye tests.”
  • “Where can I get Lindberg or Tom Ford frames fitted in [your town]?”
Common questions

What opticians ask before they start.

Why are independent opticians losing customers to AI search?

Patients type "best optician in [town]" into ChatGPT. The model will default to Specsavers and Vision Express unless independents have strong entity signals. A clean frame brand page, GOC numbers and pricing changes that.

What is the single biggest fix for an optician's website?

Publish sight test price and a proper frame brand page. Those two changes let a model match brand and price queries to your practice.

Do I need to pay for an audit?

DIY with the $15 workbook handles most of it. The $197 audit is for practices that want the fixes ranked with copy ready to paste.

How long until I see results?

One to three weeks on ChatGPT. Faster on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Will this work outside the UK?

Yes. In the US, replace GOC with state-board licensing and NHS voucher with vision insurance. Signal structure is identical.

Is there a free check?

Yes. getseoforai.com/checker gives you the prompts to paste. Under 60 seconds, no signup.
